Ulster Prevention Council

The Ulster Prevention Council was created to offer both services for capacity-building and funding to purchase Evidence- based practices for Ulster grassroots community groups and schools motivated and prepared to provide prevention services for their youth.

The Ulster Prevention Council began operations in early spring of 2007 with three central goals:

  1. Identify, codify, coordinate, and support current prevention services offered in Ulster County.
  2. Improve the quality of prevention services by providing Evidence- based practices; extend the reach of prevention services throughout the county by facilitating/grooming grass roots community coalitions to achieve an appropriate level of readiness and professionalize their activities (if they so choose).
  3. Increase our understanding of substance abuse in Ulster County by performing and advocating for community assessment, especially in our school districts.

UPC, has begun this effort by formulating a comprehensive work plan, time line, and logic model.  Current community data from the NYS PRISM Report, NYS Youth Development Survey of 2008 (administered every two years), and meetings with key informants helped to set our agenda for action.  Ulster CSAP is positioned well to work with Ulster communities in their commitment to provide our youth with a nurturing environment that fosters a healthy lifestyle.
